We all experience a range of emotions, from elation to depression and everything in between. Some emotions are viewed as more acceptable than others and which feelings are ‘allowed’ to be expressed can depend on our upbringing, culture and gender. Even if you are someone who is comfortable with the whole gamut of emotions, chances are you have found yourself in situations where opening up about your feelings is not appropriate. There is a first time for everything and, as with many of the people I have worked with over the years, there is a first time for being a client in therapy too. It can take some time to warm up to a therapist and to get comfortable with the therapeutic process - even experienced therapy-goers sometimes struggle with how to best show up for therapy.
